The original cathedral was started in 1821 but was destroyed by fire in 1865. The temporary church was similarly destroyed by fire in 1869! The current structure was built from 1869 to 1882. The two spires were not added until 1999 in time for the new millennium.
It is an impressive building. We went there once a few years ago when we were having a trip to Sydney. We weren't allowed to take photos inside the cathedral though. I think we were supposed to buy postcards or buy booklets about the cathedral. So someone must have been able to take photos, ha ha. I think the idea was to keep the money in the church. They didn't get any custom from us though.
I just like that the spires weren’t added until 130 or 140 years after they were designed. Thanks for commenting.
Thanks Babs. You can use or copy my photo for free.
Hi Denise. It’s unusual in the it runs North South following the hill and the huge park opposite. Most churches run East West.
I haven’t been. Side for40 years. I’ll have to go and take some photos.
Thanks Jon. I haven’t been inside but I go back for further exploring
