I have delved into the archives for a photo to mark the passing of HRH Prince Philip. This was taken (complete with lens licked by Monty) on 27th April 2011 when the Queen and Prince Philip came to a garden party to mark the 500th anniversary of St John's College. They must have had a nice day because she bestowed the titles of Duke & Duchess of Cambridge two days later at the Royal Wedding. Prince Philip was Chancellor of Cambridge University for 34 years and was very enthusiastic in the role, especially interested in the engineering department. He was famous, of course, for politically incorrect remarks and the Principal of one of the colleges told me that the overseas students were always keen to meet him and were disappointed if he didn't make one of his notorious quips.
I have a very blurry photo of Prince Philip in this car and it occurs to me that he was always being 'looked around' by people trying to see the queen - he didn't always have an easy job but he certainly had a remarkable life.
Glad to see this tribute. He was a fabulous character and did so much more than people know. I was terribly sad to hear the news a few hours ago. He will be much missed.
Well done for looking out this memorable shot. I sort of met Prince Philip when he came to close Monkwearmouth station in the North East. I had gone to witness the occasion as a teenager with the chap next door who was someone important on the railways.
I was just looking at my photos when I was in London in 2009 and while at Buckingham Palace the Queen and Philip drove out in the same car as in your photo and I got a few really good shots of them
Yes, not an easy role for him to play for so long, and yes, his quips were expected - at least he showed some character. He was patron of the Braemar Mountain Rescue Team when dad was leader, and dad invited him to come and see the work the team were doing, erecting the radio mast at the top of Morrone in the late 60s (a steep hill of 859m only accessible on foot or by land-rover). Dad had arranged land-rover transport for him to the top, but he wouldn't accept it and drove to the top himself in his own land-rover. Dad said he drove up there like a bat out of hell! RIP.
Certainly not dog impeded though I do quite like Montys contribution. I was with my son and we got there late only to find hundreds of people already there. The only spot we could squeeze into was right around the side with a rubbish view but it turned out it was the perfect spot to see them driving sneakily out the side entrance.
