In the news

I took this photo in February on my walk with young Alba next door. The houses are owned by Jesus College and lived in by their students and they’ve made the national news today because the college has objected to the flags. I think it’s rather harsh - the Union is shut so no debating, the pubs are shut so likewise, teaching is online and quite a few households on this street had to isolate for weeks last term. I think it is great that the whole street is supporting the LGBTQ+ community - maybe it’s the poster encouraging the college to divest from its fossil fuel investments that’s the actual problem.

Weather: blue skies, still cool
Covid: I have a proper sore arm and swollen glands so a good sign on 1st & 2nd dose immunity I reckon. Also struggling not to sleep all afternoon....
Good thing: some really excellent data on vaccine efficacy coming through.
I hope that acceptance is not the problem. We go back and forth on that in the USA. I am a proud Presbyterian and we have been accepting in church, accepting to ordain elders and I think accepting to ordain clergy. I lived through the years of fighting this fight. All are God's children in my eyes.

Oh dear I love a good flag flying, what do people object to...the flag is the perfect way to co vey ones feelings & commitment. We are still allowed to express our beliefs I hope ...perhaps not these days! 😳
Hope you feel better in the morning! Side affects vary so much!

I would have added an EU one just for measure.

@cdonohoue @happypat they’re not objecting to supporting LGBTQ+ people but claim the flags are a health and safety issue, not suitable for historic buildings and breaking the rules about engaging in political activities. I’m pretty sure universities are supposed to encourage political engagement so it’s a very odd situation. The Master is my age and the first black woman to lead a Cambridge College - she is a very successful producer of music and radio content amongst other roles in the arts and the university has had long acceptance of gay people - well before legalisation the likes of Alan Turing were ‘understood’ - the university would have lost half its best talent over the years if it was worried about sexuality. They aren’t even tatty!

@fueast a ‘vote Labour’ poster was mentioned- can’t believe that is upsetting the Fellows but the student has been told to remove it!

@judithg yes the free speech in universities crowd don't really mean that do they. They only want free speech for the right.

@fueast I’d be surprised if Jesus is a Tory hotbed - Peterhouse or Magdalene - yes!

@judithg thanks for the laugh

Regardless of the controversy of the flags being a health/safety issue, they do make a striking image and add a splendid splash of color. Love them!

I would rather see these colorful flags than protest signs.

I think these look rather lovely and colourful and can't imagine why they could or should pose any problem to anyone! But hey ho, that's the way it goes. There's always something or someone. These flags add a bit of character.

Nice to see Rainbow flags flying proudly! Here's to more tolerance in our world.

People are so offendable these days, it seems! The watchword seems to be tolerance but actually it is intolerance for a viewpoint someone else does not share, yet no-one seems to see the irony. Madness.
Good diary shot of the goings on. I have no problem with it!
