Thanks Mum! by judithg

Thanks Mum!

Well sewing with this new machine is completely different to the old one - a lot less rattly and noisy for starters... I've been playing with the fancier settings - not exactly an expert yet but I'm pleased with the outcome. I need to buy some silkier thread to do this properly I think. Thanks for the lovely feedback on my recent pics whilst I've been AWOL.
Three good things:
1. Lovely mum and dad for giving me the fab machine.
2. I walked the dog this morning and now it's chucking it down we can both stay in.
3. I'm doing a 'Reading Recovery' course tomorrow & Tuesday - it's a very effective way of teaching young children who are struggling to get to grips with reading so when I volunteer in school I should be more useful.
Aww, this looks so nice and warm and homely :). Glad you like your new machine! I'm still rubbish with sewing. Maybe some day I'll learn :).

@jannaellen Trial and error in my case - I made a couple of nice dresses for Rachel though when she was about 2 or 3 and you have to get your act together when they start wanting Victorian/Roman/Medieval/Greek/Egyptian costumes for school at very short notice!!

Oh, I love this! Have fun with the sewing machine! Mine is shamefully gathering dust so to speak

This is lovely!

I do think being able to make things on a sewing machine is a great accomplishment, there are so many fabulous materials out there now that it would be very tempting to learn how. Enjoy & you will soon become an expert!!! Reading Recovery sounds very useful!

Happy stitching Judith, It makes my sewing machine look like some thing from the ark

That's a fantastic and lovely first effort on the newly given machine. (Used to make loads of stuff for myself and the children, even made my own wedding dress.) Reading Recovery has had a great success I understand.

This is so cool. I know the feeling about a new fancy machine. My older daughter asked me to make flower girl outfits for her wedding 15 years ago or so. I had a 1964 Singer at the time and used it as an excuse to modernize. What a change! Nice celebratory shot

Lovely composition of this pic and great that you are enjoying your new machine. I too used to make things for the children when they were little and although I've still got the machine, whenever I've got it out to do anything, it always seems to go wrong so I've given up!

Lovely, warm, touching picture.

Like the warmth you have here Judith.

I love how you captured this, I always wanted to lean to sew, but never did.

I learned on an old treadle Singer...made tons of clothes and costumes and household items over the years. Mom gave me her old Viking and I used it until it wore out and caught on fire! Boy did I run that out into the driveway in a hurry! What a shame, it was one week over the twenty five year warranty...and sort of smashed when I dropped it on the blacktop. Bought a cheap Singer and really only use if for mending now. Yours looks fun!!!

I too learned on my grandmother's old treadle machine. Cut my hair and hid it in the drawers. Found my grandmother's (she was diabetic) hidden candy bars.....so sewing machines are one of my "comfort" things. Instant memories. I love this warm, mellow shot. Looks like you will be making lots of memories.

What a lovely composition and the shot has such a great mood. I hope you find the reading recovery course interesting and helpful. I did it a few years ago and found it really great

Awesome shot! Brings back memories. My mom did lots of sewing, too!

Wow! How cool!

Nice lettering. Beats tattooing

I'm terrible at sewing! Wouldn't know where to start with a machine! Your lettering is lovely, when William comes home from school saying he has to dress up as something I usually panic, then call my creative sister!

Lovely picture to show it off.

I was thinking of getting rid of my VERY old machine .. noe =w i've had both my 12 year old grand daughter wanting to learn to sew , amd my lovely daughter in law. down in Sussex

@jannaellen I have to agree with Judith here. get your sewing skills up to scratch before the babe reaches 4 years old. I can't tell you how many Spartans, Ancient Egyptians, Frankenstein's monsters, elves, Aladdins etc. etc. etc. I've made over the past 20 years!...and still making them occasionally for my grown up children to attend fancy dress parties :o)

This machine looks like fun Judith. I got a new one for my 40th birthday and don't use it as much as I'd like to xx

Very fancy! I still have a 30 year old Kenmore machine. It does straight lines and zigzag...that's about it. I know the new ones are computerized and practically run themselves. Have fun with that fab machine!

I am not good at sewing but some of the blogs I read are by sewers and quilters. Looking forward to seeing your handiwork. This embroidery looks very cute and it's a great photo.

that's clever stitching! Love the little story tag too.
