Popular Porter by judithg

Popular Porter

A day of mundane but necessary tasks so I resolved to use a shot from yesterday and took Monty out without my camera only to miss a swan doing the most spectacular river landing I've ever seen. He clearly enjoyed it and I cursed my lack of equipment. I've been wanting to photograph the porters at the back of Trinity for ages because they have great silhouettes against the stone facia of the college building - and now I have a lens that can do the job. In fact I intended to post a much wider view with the whole porter and a huge background but then I decided that this was a more interesting crop. I may have been wrong... @fueast may recognise this chap as we harangued him for shots on our photo walk.
Three good things:
1. Adam's team came second in the tournament and are therefore through to the National Championships in January. Big exciting news is that they get customised kit for the event.
2. Boring mundane jobs are mostly done.
3. I'm not going out tonight :0)
I do I do I know him. He seemed like a nice chap. Like your composition. You've gone all sneaky with that new lens

@fueast Yes he did seem very nice. I wasn't sneaky enough - we eyeballed each other from a distance before I lost my nerve. Think he may think I'm a stalker.

Dramatic shot of his boiler hatted figure in front of the stone! It looks like Oamaru Stone!

loe the tones and silhouette

He has an almost sinister look with that beard, though he may be an agent for Dr Faustus. I am sure he will do you a very good deal.

Not the Wailing Wall then? Love the contrast :)

Really striking image. Makes us all stop and begin to write a story to go with it doesn't it?! Love the photos that make me pause and think that way.

I like this crop very much - but have no idea what the whole would be.

Very effective composition. Love the hat.

I think this shot makes him look much more intriguing and interesting than a porter. As for going out without a camera, it's just asking for trouble, I've found to my cost!!!

excellent shot, even like the bush thing behind the Porterman, fab.

Brilliant shot! Great lens, the detail on his face is great too, seeing as you're far away. I like the crop, agree, very interesting.

Terrific crop! Terrific focus, too! Love the beautiful textures and color tones of the wall.

Love the tones and light!

Um, so what exactly IS a porter? Does it have something to do with doors? If so, why is he not at his post? Or do they carry things? If so, why is he not carrying anything? I think you should continue stalking and solve these mysteries for me.

Great composition and wonderful light. Like the way he is exactly in front of a prickly bush - prickly chap?
November 19th, 2012
I'm sure we came across this chap when I was with you too! it;s a great shot!
November 19th, 2012
@sparkle Probably - it's at the back there where we weren't allowed to go for our own good!!
November 19th, 2012
Great capture and composition.

Super pic!

Fabulous photo! Glad I'm not the only one that doesn't know what a porter is.

@bpaquette @nanalisarocks It's a good question! They don't carry things! They man the entrances to the College and laugh at students checking their pigeon holes 20 times a day, sort then out with lost keys and make sure that they are behaving themselves. They also make sure visitors are behaving and not walking through with dogs, having picnics or playing radios or any of the other 'not allowed things'. And they are generally friendly and helpful (especially Trinity). Often ex-military.
