With Adam away at a fancy party in Wales and Rachel working until 9pm we found ourselves 'a couple' last night and decided to take advantage. We headed first to The Varsity Hotel rooftop bar. I have been reluctant to go as I fundamentally object to them being allowed to build a monstrous box which has spoilt a very pretty skyline, but in the interests of getting a nice photo we went. We managed to chose the chilliest evening for about 2 months and it was still busy in a slightly unrefined way which wouldn't have mattered if they hadn't been charging £11 for cocktails (I didn't have one). Anyway after a luke warm, overpriced burger which didn't even run to accompanying fries and not particularly inspiring views we debunked to The Maypole. This is a blast from the past sort of pub that we frequented as students, with a nice atmosphere and cocktails half the price of The Varsity. I went for a creamy/hazelnutty affair which was not very alcoholic and something of a cholesterol catastrophe. So we moved on to The Anchor which overlooks Rachel's punt station, convenient for giving her a lift home, and another pub we haven't frequented since our student days. It's in a prime position for tourists which is why we don't tend to go but in actual fact is a very nice place for a drink and we looked rather enviously at other people's reasonably priced and much more attractive-looking meals than the ones we had just taken out a second mortgage for. We then spied on Rachel coming back from punting a big party for a Thai meal. Two hours of slow punting while they enjoyed themselves and not a penny tip the miserable lot. It was a bit odd sitting in a big window watching her without being seen and we felt like the parents in a hideous reality programme that the kids like to watch, 'Sex, sea and suspicious parents' but without the sex, sea or suspicion.
Anyway a walk this morning to Hardwick with Monty and the rape seed has been harvested and along with it the wonderful, diverse wild-flower borders by the stream. Very sad though I suppose the farmers rent the machinery and decided to 'tidy up' while they have it available.
Three good things:
1. Rediscovering some nice pubs
2. Nigel's busy replacing the rusty shower basket etc
3. A pretty 'brown' photo that I'm quite pleased with - just as well as the ones I was really excited about are not quite in focus
Sounds like a pub crawl to me Judith!!! Very interesting evening though & good to do a little spying...in the interest of research of course!! Our evening was spoilt by very vicious air conditioning!
Love your brown photo, search pretty dof with a softness about it!
Farmers are supposed to leave the grown up edges if they are picking up the Environmental Entry Level money!!
Love your narrative, this shot is gorgeous, soft and pretty with wonderful DOF. Trying BIlls tomorrow for lunch with @tishpics and children, did consider the anchor. If you are in town give us a wave x
Lovely tones in this and it makes a nice change to see creams and browns with the abundance of brightly coloured flower shots we all keep posting (not that I'm complaining!). Great dof and focus too.
Yes, I agree with the others about a nice brown photo with the interest you have captured! I enjoyed your commentary - as good as seeing the photo! I have learnt you pay for views!
I really like the colour brown and especially in this picture - the tones work so well together. Sounds like a really fun evening minus the overprized burger.
Like your 'diary'. Pub-crawling eh?! Lovely subtle shot. I was incensed to find the council had scalped the wild rose bushes on the green here, taking remaining flowers, ripening hips et al - have they no soul?
"Sex, sea and suspicious parents"?! Even with my penchant for unforgivably bad telly I've never heard of that one. I'm guessing it would probably pull higher ratings than your alternative show "...parents" though.
I love all the browns here. So soft and yet not without definition.
