...and Found

Nigel had a rather epic journey up to Middlesborough via Birmingham last night. He and Rachel have gone to a karate championship up there and they spent a long, long journey diverting around accidents. I took myself off to bed when they were near enough to their destination for me to feel happy and awoke rather late - they had both already won a silver medal each while I was still in my pyjamas. I don't know about the rest of the competition (probably haven't finished their bits yet) but I'm proud. Adam has gone off to play an away hockey game in Peterborough but I squeezed in a dog walk before he went. It's the Cambridge Festival of Ideas this week and I often feel that I'm missing something in my brain because very few of the events appeal. We did have a little wander around the Archaeologists 'Iron age' event though as we were walking past - briefly watched a man skinning a deer with a flint which was less exciting for Monty than I imagined - must have been fresh and not very smelly. After we left for a meander through the Astronomy Dept I was taken by this little sign - if you're wondering what's on the tear off strips it's 'project wild things.com' - I haven't checked it out yet.
Three GT:
1. My swan is on PP - thank you!
2. A free day tomorrow to make the garden storm ready - a question for those of you used to strong winds - do I leave my greenhouse windows/door open and hope the wind pass through or close it up? There's nothing precious inside at the moment.
3. Nigel home before the storms (I hope)
this picture is wonderful :)

Eye catching poster!

Jo
What a wonderful sign, well spotted and well worth the shot.

Two swans on PP - congrats, very well done!! I wonder which one you personally like best.

Well my instinct would be to close all doors & windows because perhaps so much wind would get in that it might build up & not all be able to get out quick enough...does that make sense? I hope there isn't much on the M62 tomorrow afternoon!!!
Well done to Nigel & Rachel & hopefully more today....all your family are very energetic...except you!!! LOL!
Just wondering what the little strips that you presumably tear off on that notice.....I have just read your comments again & there is the answer, silly me!

Well I'm glad the hedgehog isn' lost. Interesting question about the greenhouse. You've got me thinking about bernoulli's equation.... Pressumably you need to minimise any possible pressure differences that might build up?I think you need to fit some pressure release vents and shut the windows.
October 26th, 2013
@happypat How very dare you Pat - I'm about to do some extreme ironing ;0) I've just decided the greenhouse is nice and curvy and the wind will go over as it's going east west - and anyway I'm putting lots of pots in there! @fueast Thanks for that.... very helpful :0/

@quietpurplehaze Between this and the one at the beginning of the month? I probably prefer this because I was frustrated by the things that were 'wrong' about the other - but it did have a better shape and reflection.
October 26th, 2013
@judithg Well I hope you're not being sarcastic. I normally charge for engineering consultancy :-0 actually streamlining is a good idea. Put a giant cycle helmet over it?
October 26th, 2013
@fueast I'm thinking though that the wind blowing past the flat ends is going to create pressure problems though - oh decisions decisions. Still -another valuable idea from you at the end there.
October 26th, 2013
@judithg Defo don't leave the windows open though. I was being a bit serious about putting in vents. Might be too late but its what they do in buildings for fire safety etc. if I wasn't going out I would research...
October 26th, 2013
@fueast Where am I going to get vents by tomorrow?! I could have paid extra for low down vents but I wasn't planning for a hurricane.
October 26th, 2013
Look - genious suggestion by this guy - tumble dryer vents, and silicone over the glass screws. Really must get changed now. Maybe don#t worry about it and fix it for next time? http://grumpygitsandusefultips.blogspot.co.uk/2011/07/greenhouse-glass-and-windy-conditions.html

@judithg

Interesting - I slightly prefer this one too.
October 26th, 2013
Okay, I totally have no idea what you and Alison are talking about but hope it turns out well. I love the sign against the lovely weathered wood and the sentiment.
October 26th, 2013
@fueast Genius - mind you I don't know why I'm fussing about air pressures - if it's really windy I should be worried about all the trees that could land on it!
October 26th, 2013
Take all the glass out and store it indoors :D
October 26th, 2013
Looks like a good idea! Not sure about the greenhouse thing but I would suggest closing it up, that's what I'm going with mine!
October 26th, 2013
@johnnyfrs I'm on it....

Great picture
October 26th, 2013
I was on emptying pillar boxes last night..tuned into Simon Mayo's friday all request show on Radio 2...the traffic bulletins made me wince..but the two medals were worth it...Poppet raced today for Nottingham Uni.. A team...down in Oxford Uni...i believe they are partying tonight...lol...

This is so sweet!
You have every right to be proud - though the journey there would probably exhaust me, never mind the rest.
October 26th, 2013
Makes one think - both the hedgehog and the quandary! On asking my hubby it sounds like the whole thing is going to blow inside out and there will be only bits left to pick up! Ha ha! We had 70km gusts yesterday and my glass house, though old, stood up to it - all windows closed!
October 26th, 2013
judith, this has a feel of a cowboy / wild west "wanted" poster ...... not that a cute little hedgehog could be a baddie !
October 26th, 2013
Love the poster - can you wedge anything against the greenhouse to direct the wind over it? Panicking a bit now because we're in Norfolk so can't do anything about our's!
October 26th, 2013
Great find. How original to put something up like this. Nicely captured.
October 26th, 2013
@maggiemae Thanks Maggie - I'm going with closed. That blog @fueast linked to talk about them exploding inside out! @taz_o Might be the least of our problems given the number of trees near the house! At least Norfolk should be less windy!
October 26th, 2013
A fun shot and interesting dialogue about the greenhouse! Glad I. Not the only one to find little to really grab me at the Festival of Ideas. Are you going to the Camera Club exhibition next week?
October 26th, 2013
@dolphin Ironically I looked through the brochure tonight and found a few interesting things that I've missed!! I am going to try and get into the Guildhall this week yes. Also Martin Bond who does the Cambridge Diary photos is talking at the Cambridge Darkroom meeting at The Fointain pub on Wednesday evening - not sure if I'm brave enough just to turn up on my own but it should be interesting.

What a good reminder to stop worrying about my gardens and just get out and enjoy the nature thing. Although we have had our first rather spotty frost and there are all those slimy plants to remove.
October 27th, 2013
I like this natural, earthy shot...and it's message. Hope the storms spare your greenhouse any damage, Judith. I'm afraid I don't have any advice to offer on safeguarding it from rough weather. But the 'take the glass out' suggestion seemed rather foolproof. :) And well done to Nigel and Rachel with their karate accomplishments!!
October 27th, 2013
Love this sign and shot. Don't know what to say re the greenhouse. We get big winds but our greenhouse is attached with little plastic cs and they just blow down the hill a bit with the plastic and plastic pipes and we collect them all and put it back together again. Hope your trees survive
October 27th, 2013
Touching
October 27th, 2013
Just off to pick the last of my tomatoes in case the greenhouse explodes/implodes whatever. Actually I am fretting a bit about what it is best to do with the donks - shut them in their stables or let them roam for the night. It's a roof blowing off/in v branches and trees coming down thing. Dithering and going out for dinner soon so better get on with my decision making.
October 27th, 2013
@fueast @judithg I'm thinking I need to get out and buy myself a couple of greenhouses to experiment with....i'm wondering whether both bridges into Wales will be shut and whether its worth even trying to get across the water...it's ajolly good excuse not to go. Train isn't an answer as I might get trapped if overhead wires come down. Maybe I'll stay at my Mum's and eat cake and see what happens to their greenhouse! (they will be keeping their windows shut!
October 27th, 2013
I would turn the alarm off and not even try - it would be irresponsible! @sparkle
October 27th, 2013
@judithg Shame I've got something on already on Wed evening - sounds interesting. I looked at the Camera Club website and most of them seemed way out of my league - but it will be interesting to see the exhibition.
October 27th, 2013
@dolphin I agree! I think Cambridge Darkroom may be different - I'm not sure who's who. And @lucypics has guests so I can't drag her out...
October 27th, 2013
@judithg :-( it's true or I would have loved to go!
October 27th, 2013
Eye catching sign... I would have stopped and read it!
October 28th, 2013

Cool sign. A month or two back I came across a wanted sign made by "a very sad nine year old" who had lost a brown dog who was also a skittle, complete with doleful drawing of sad floppy-eared dog-skittle. I do hope someone found it.

Hope your greenhouse survived, too. That was all getting quite technical up there!
