Rachel, Monty and I went over to Newnham to check on the cute-baby-feathery-things situation at lunchtime. First of all the little yellow gosling (possibly, sadly, only one but I can't be sure) has morphed into a cute white gosling. Secondly, a new fluffy yellow gosling has hatched - presumably a different mother but communal parenting of both babies is in action. Thirdly, - see above! The 'punt nest' has hatched - all bar one egg which you can probably see. When we arrived a swimming lesson was just ending and the babies very quickly fell asleep. This is the nest from 12 May - which also appeared on 28 May http://365project.org/judithg/365/2014-05-12 . I also have a wren - not a baby but cute and feathery nonetheless in Extras.
Three GT:
1. Scudamores for not moving the punts.
2. Being allowed to volunteer with little readers.
3. Rachel has made a lemon cake.
Oh lovely Judith, she seems to be telling them something very important....isn't all this new life wonderful!her nesting place seems to be very well chosen.........lemon cake, my very favourite!
Btw Judith fantastic photo on the Guardian eye witness series of revellers from the May Balls in Cambridge, some in a boat & some on one of the bridges...a very atmospheric photo.
@dolphin yes - guessing it won't hatch now. The other one at Newnham has at least 2 left in the nest. Maybe they go off - you'd expect something to eat them
Oh I miss all the nest goings-on from the mooring. The geese never seemed to do too well near us, either. (One year when the nests were too close there was an active gosling massacre by the swans - very Game of Thrones...)
