I am deeply mortified to admit that, until yesterday, I didn't know that this is a FEMALE red-winged blackbird! I'm able to identify a fair amount of birds, but this one never came up on my radar. Look at the reproach in her eye! Anyway, this is protective coloration so she can hide in the reeds on her nest, built by her mate, who arrived earlier to stake out his territory and create a home for his family. The robust songs we hear every spring are sung by the males who are laying claim to their chosen habitat, warning competitors away, and luring in as many females as they think they can handle. (The good news is, because of 365, I am no longer wallowing in my ignorance! Thank you, 365!) ;)
