Another photo of the Bee Fly (Bombylius major), this time she is busy laying eggs in an earthy bank on Turn Hill NT. The female flicks eggs close to the entrance of the nests of digging bees or wasps. Then her larvae will hatch and feed on the wasp or bee larvae. Although the larvae are parasites, the adults just feed on nectar and are valuable pollinators - I posted another picture of one feeding on ground ivy flowers on 14 April http://365project.org/julienne1/365/2016-04-14
