Hi kali, were partnered which, for me, is always exciting.

Hi Kali, I have finally started on a rag rug! It's probably a bit more difficult than I thought, more awkward than anything I guess. Do you have trouble working on the inside of the rug. I've started with a chevron pattern and think it's going to be quite difficult once there is a lot of completed rug to try to hold. How do you manage it?
These are all beautiful by the way!! If you're making up your own designs they are fantastic :)
@bella_ss hi sheralle, thats great to hear! i dont find it too difficult, might get a bit heavy on your knees, i sit on my bed and have most of the rug supported on the bed beside me if i can. but the hook just keeps going into the holes even as the weave firms up. sometimes i work out from the centre and other times do a border first but i havent noticed one being harder than the other. yes i just dream up the designs, but i get frustrated with the complicated ones so at the moment i am just doing little squares of colour like a Paul Klee painting :)
@kali66 Thanks for replying Kali! I imagine it will get easier the more that I do. I find the latch hook a bit difficult so I was using a crochet hook but have now squeezed the end of the latch hook together a bit and have been using it again. Sometimes it is a bit wide to squeeze through the hessian. It seems getting the width of the material is important too as I've cut some a bit too wide and then it's harder to pull through. I see that you can buy a rug hook that is more like a crochet hook but I can't get one here. You do use the latch hook though don't you?
I'm only using a scrap of hessian that I already had so it's only a door mat size, very small and good for a first try, haha. I think I will love the end result though. I look forward to doing a lovely colourful patterned one more like you've done. I have no idea how you made your cat look so great!! I think an animal would be very difficult to get a good result with.
I imagine out of the above ones that the middle one was the most difficult to do?
@bella_ss that one looks elaborate but it was just fiddly in the middle bit, if you can draw it you can hook it! but you do have to consider the scale of detail you can do, its pretty much a pixelated image. if you use thin strips and go in every hole you can get it pretty detailed, and things like the cats whiskers were done at the end . yes i use a latch hook, sometimes it catches but you get better at feeding the fabric into the hook on the underside and making sure the latch is closed before you pull through, if it wont go in you might be making your stitches a bit too close.
@kali66 Okay, thanks Kali. I thought it might just be a matter of getting better at it. I often don't push the latch all the way through and so don't use the latch sometimes but other times I need the latch. If anything I might be making them too far apart as sometimes there might be four threads between stitches but I'm sure I'll get better at judging that. It's looking quite good anyway. It's good to know you use the latch every time and I probably just need to get better at hooking and closing the latch. Thank you again for helping, I will post my finished mat when I'm done :D
PS, I looked at Paul Klee pics and there's some great inspiration there!!
