Koala actually have a plate of cartilage across their lower back area, the same way a wombat does.
In this photo Mist is actually sitting on that area as you can see with her legs lifted up it's her lower back rather than her bum that she is on.
Lovely Mist is looking so perky -- she must have has her sleep and now is watching you ! -fav

Paula I agree, the forest red gums are quite stunning trees - notice how the trunk colours are exact matches for koala colours ... I love that little bit of interest :)
