That scent gland shows clearly how male Jordan is - it releases an oily substance with a musky smell that he rubs on tree trunks and branches to mark his territory. Once you smell it, you never quite forget it :)
I love how solid and broad he is, that he seems to have no neck. That is all muscle - koalas carry practically zero body fat either among their muscles or their internal organs.
Thank you for such awesome questions and comments here :)
A great portrait - wish we could have a scratch-and-smell so we could experience the male scent glands (whether I would like or detest it !!! ha haa !!)
@madeinnl they usually did just wake up - koalas sleep 18 - 22 hours a day. Much of that time they are only sleeping lightly, kind of dozing. So most of the time when I find them they are asleep or dozing, and to get a photo I have to get their attention and wake them :)
@fbailey it certainly ramps up in the breeding season so it part of the territory marking is also an announcement to the girls. Each koala can certainly tell the other part by smell :) I am giggling now imagining you walking into some fancy event and smelling a musky perfume and suddenly koalas rubbing against trees flashes through your mind ......
New young stud on the block! He does have a thick solid look about him.
So glad to find this shot. I thought you had stopped posting for a while only to realize, today, that somehow I had unfollowed you and was no longer getting your shots in my feed.
I’m in absolute awe of your amazing photography skills KG. How you manage to hold your camera steady to shoot the koalas so high in the trees and get such sharp images is more than impressive. Just keep it up my friend 😁
