I cannot say what conditions there are when you book online to see St John's Cathedral but I think the earlier you go the better because you not only avoid the queues but you can enjoy going around the place with fewer people to disturb you. Remember not to miss two masterpieces of Caravaggio - the beading of John the Baptist and a smaller painted of St Nicholas. Also the Flemish tapestries which should be on show at the cathedral museum. Other places of interest in Valletta are the Grandmaster's Palace ( today the presidents palace) and the armoury in side the same place. A visit to the Upper Barracca Gardens has a fabulous view of the Grand Harbour which is considered as one of the most beautiful harbours worldwide. There are also interesting sculptures and at noon a detachment of soldiers will fire a cannon. A few meters away is Castile Square with the beautiful facade of Auberge de Castille, the Prime Minister's Office (you cannot go in there). There are also beautiful churches in Valletta, St Paul's Church and the Basilica of Our Lady of Carmel amongst them. Fort St Elmo and the Mediterranean Conference Centre are also worth visiting. There are many other interesting places to visit all cramped up within the walls of Valletta and all reachable on foot.
