Oamaru's Victorian events continue. This was a cute button trying to get his costume dirty! You can see more detail in large, including some interesting faces.

On the last days of her visit to Chester, Mum in her 1929 travel diary wrote that they went for a sail on the River Dee to Duke of Westminster’s estate. They then found St John’s Church which was most interesting to learn about. Then she said. Tonight, after another excellent dinner, we went to Paddy the next best thing and at 9pm wrote diaries for an hour.” Paddy” was splendid – the rest, only fair. “ I couldn’t make sense of this with the ‘and’ in there then had an inspiration and googled “1929 film Paddy” and whoopee up came up “Paddy and the next best thing”! I don’t know what it was about.
They drove through Mold then St Asaph to Abergele and finally to Conway. The castle there that they visited is absolutely amazing – hard to believe it is still standing so magnificently! I had to keep looking at the pictures in Wikipedia! Imagine walls 12 foot thick and are a mile long! She called one of the towers, what looks like “Sutlers” but I can’t find that word anywhere. I think the next lot of towers belong to Caernavon so am looking forward to reading about this.
I love the photo -- the costumes seem very well made and authentic. I've seen both Conway and Caernarvon and wish I could see them again. Both are absolutely magnificent. You really need to follow your mother's footsteps through England and Wales.
Lovely shot and a brilliant old tractor Maggie. My best friend lived in Conway, he had a cottage at the base of the Castle wall. He and his wife had a shop in Conway itself.
Thanks again for sharing a further episode from your mother's adventures.
