I put the feeder out hanging it on the trellis not far from a window. I had plenty of time to work out the best settings - on the speed setting the camera automatically set the ISO to 400 and the picture was grainy. The same happened if I used the multi picture setting. The ISO remained low on the aperture setting so that was good learning for me. These are wax eyes and they loved this food - the whole thing was gone in one day!
Three good things:
1.I have conquered the hula hoop
2. The neighbours cat hid under the rhododendron and when I noticed there were no birds there, I was able to shoo him away with a fierce hiss!
3. My cat photo went on to PP in one day! Thanks everyone who fav'd it! I was stoked!
What amazing eyes those little birds have & so near your window too.
A hula hoop sounds as though it might whittle the waist , do you see any soigns of that happening maggiemae, might be the thing to go for!!
I can just see the sign & photo..all these hula hoop grannies!!
@happypat people look at me as if I was mad when I mention hula hoop! It takes great concentration which is good for one but my thick waist hasn't got thickless, just strengthened a few muscles!
@maggiemae Ah well give it time ...perhaps it's an age thing...all my weight has come off the wrong places & still could lose the love handles...I think the hoop might stick on my hips LOL!
A quick hint; I always try and set the ISO 400 and above, sometimes even as high as 1600 when I take bird shots. The shutter speed must be as high as possible because these critters never sit still, they are a lot quicker than your finger on the shutter! There is a saying "Rather a sharp, well focussed, shot with a high ISO, than a blurry one with a slow shutter speed"! These are beautiful little birds and are on my "to shoot" bucket list!
@genesis_one Thanks Corrie. I think my meagre camera does not accommodate the high ISO settings as well as a DSIL. I have seen super shots and they have high ISO settings. But I did notice that the speed was slow in this shot!
Cool birds! Love that waxy ring around their eyes. I use a coffee can filled with moth balls to keep the cats away. Poke some holes in the lid so the fragrance gets out. Cats hate the smell of moth balls. Put it under your bush or near your feeder. The neighbor's kitty will probably stay away. Good shot!
Congrats on PP AND the hula hoop! I am just now venturing out on my camera settings. I need a private tutor. I like your colors and the fact that you caught so many of them!

Congrats on the hula hoop......I had one many, many years ago :)
