Our room is on the top floor and had sky views! ……………..I’m kidding!
This is on the East Coast of the North Island in a place named East Cape. Quite wild and only one road goes round it.
We did find a room in a new motel where the water lapped into the beach only a few meters away!
Our road travels took us into hinterland and at one ‘coffee’ stop, the power was out - no coffee, no credit. I said just water and she plonked a bottle of water in front of me. I replied, I’m not buying water! She responded by saying, sorry the water is pumped up using electricity and so there is none from the taps. We compromised by using the water we had in the car and one of her paper beakers which cost 50cents! Photo seen in my other album.
Three good things:
1. In spite of meeting about 30 logging trucks on the road, we were not bothered by traffic.
2. While were at the ‘coffee’ stop, the bus pulled in and a mottly looking crowd got out. A toothless wonder in a knee length blouse came up to us and asked if we were the owners! I suppose we looked a bit better off than all the others!
3. In front of our unit tonight, there were bikers going back and forth very seriously, obviously in a timed circuit. Glad I was not among them as it was raining by then.
Ha ha maggiemae it sounds as though it hasn't changed much since we took that road six years ago! The grotty hotel we stayed at was at Tikitiki.....so remote from modern life. I seem to remember the other side over the top was better. We stopped in Whangaporaoa for fish & chips I remember & ate them up to the sea. We went the other way round had an ice cream at the macadamia nut place ...think that is the name of the nuts.
This looks as though it has been a lovely house at one time!
So enjoying your trip!
We honeymooned around this area .. and loved the remoteness .. must go back one day.. sounds like they have not caught up with the rest of the country.. love this old house and a typical East Coast horse..
Some tlc wouldn't go amiss here! Sounds like a great place to visit if you are looking to get away from it all (and the maddening crowds). How crazy that you must pay for something that is totally beyond your control. They should be able to come
to some sort of compromise.
Well I'm enjoying your trip Magggiemae. Sounds as though that area hasn't hit the 21st century yet! I love it when you come across places like this. It makes you appreciate what you've got and reminds you that life was not always as it is now.
Shame when buildings like this are left to fall apart. In this country somebody would have bought it and have it as a holiday home. Love that you have got the horse in the photo.
I seriously love this capture, and it definitely captures your description of the area!! So, I will assume that the eastern coast of the North Island is extremely rural, and home to outcasts and interesting characters!! FAV!
Sounds a fun journey. I was telling friends how I always managed to get something to eat in even the smallest place we stopped at in NZ but I obviously didn't go to as remote a place as you. Love this shot
