Right across the building in yesterday's photo still stands this gem. Unfortunately the space does not allow me to show the right side, which is asymmetric to the left one. It is a marvel of a building, left to decay. But this is private.
My guess is that the ownership of this building is being legally disputed, as there are so many in this town. Lots and lots of beautiful buildings were owned by a church or the other. Then the communists appropriated (I mean they took ownership forcefully) them and then, the authorities sold the buildings to the people living in them. But... a law was issued that allowed former owners (from whom the buildings were appropriated) to request their properties or to be compensated, after long costly legal procedure. And of course, the humble churches (both Orthodox and Catholic) can't resist the temptation... So, such buildings come to a point when the owner is not definitive and hence no one invests even in preserving them. Again, this is on one of the largest main boulevards under my rock.
it's a beautiful building showing its lament over the state it's in. if i was a billionaire i'd buy it and turn it into a gallery for the artsygang's work. aces!
It's so sad. I think we see it more and more in Europe. nowadays historical buildings making room for ugly glass towers. modern is in and history goes out the window.
