Tear down to rebuild

Before 1989, the local football team was in the first league, because the dictator's son was ruling the town. And because back then there wasn't much entertainment, the local stadium was full on Sundays. And I was always astonished when the people left, as the whole street was crowded for about a half an hour. Or at least that's what it felt. Our window was in shade because of the constant flow of people pouring out of the stadium.
Nowadays, the local authorities are modernizing the stadium, although the local team is in the second league. And football has been really poor not only in our town, but in the country, as a rule. Here, you can spot a part of the old arena on the right and the new construction on the left and in the back. Work is going on. There are many unanswered question about why they did not tear down the old construction when they started. But they must know better" architects, engineers, constructors.
No-one will ever understand how the brains of those in charge actually work. This is a nice candid shot, and will be good to compare when the rebuild is finished.

Great shot and story. I suppose we have to remember that it does cost money to tear things down. Pity about the football.

Interesting narrative. Hope the construction is not being a nuisance in your normal live.

Good pov. Interesting history of the stadium. Whatever happened to the dictator's son that was ruling the town?

@dkellogg He's dead now. There is a succinct article on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicu_Ceau%C8%99escu

@ingrid01 Well, it is not entirely awful. It is very noisy, but you can't build without noise. It is acceptable. They sometimes work on Saturdays, but never on Sundays or at night.

Nice street capture.

Our leader suffers from a stadium-building obsession, having played football for second-tier teams in his youth. I have had the pleasure of seeing and photographing many demolitions and constructions.

@christinav @dkellogg As odd as it may sound, having him as supreme authority was a good thing. Things were not allowed to be THAT bad in this town. Hence the football team being promoted in the first league. Grocery stores not that empty. Things were built and improved - at least superficially. It had to look good where the family was ruling... It doesn't mean it was heaven. As a matter of fact, in those times everybody had money. it was the merchandise that was missing. You had nothing to do with money. People had cars, but they did not have gas.
