I often see this pretty purplish-pink flower in parks. This is the Singapore Rhododendron. But it is neither a rhododendron nor exclusively found in Singapore. The plant is a Melastoma malabathricum and grows commonly in many countries in East Asia and Southeast Asia.
Birds, bees, wasps, ants, butterflies and small mammals like squirrels and monkeys are attracted to this plant because of its flowers and sweet, berry-like fruits. The flowers, once opened, last only a day. The fruits, leaves and roots can be used for medicinal purposes.
According to the Wiki, it's been declared a "noxious weed" in the U.S.A.
I sure don't see this as a "noxious weed!" Really beautiful (color and clarity here) and interesting that it only blooms for one day. You are attracted to the "unusual" as I am, Livia. Let's go on a shoot together. :)
"noxious weed" just like dandelions...it's all in the eye of the beholder. I think both plants are pretty. (but eww, the stamens do look like spider legs)
It looks like a flower that has fruits that leave a purple stain on yr tongue. Used to eat them when I was a lil girl. Can never cheat Mom because of the stain.
I was wondering, do you just research after you have taken your photo or are you a vast encyclopedia of knowledge as far as flora is concerned? Either way it is highly commendable that you bother to share. I love the two tone composition and shadows in this one.
@tooki Yes! According to what I've read, the fruit stains the tongue black! 8P
@teamoliver I research afterwards because I'm always curious about what I have just shot. I refer to a few nature blogs (written by local bloggers) and see if they help, and then google for more information. But with some bugs and flowers, I still end up being clueless because my google-fu fails me from time to time. 8)
A great, big, brightly colored, happy-looking, sweet and lovely "THANK YOU!" to everyone!
Thank you for taking the time to stop by. I do agree, it looks too pretty to be a weed! I like seeing these flowers because they're bright and happy looking. Thank you so much for your constant encouragement. I am grateful for your support.

Again, thank you very much!
