Chrysalid by mzzhope

Chrysalid

I had the perfect subject for my tags INSECT and COLD all along! This is one of my two overwintering Swallowtail Butterfly chrysalids that are spending the winter (waiting to emerge in spring) in a net enclosure on my porch.
That is too cool…love the shape and textures!

Wow- interesting to learn that. I would think the winter cold would kill them. Can't wait to see the shots of when they emerge!

I had found ten of these in the caterpillar stage eating up the tops of my carrots one October. I kept them in the garage all winter and brought them to school in the spring. The first one emerged the day the woman from the Audubon Society came to make a presentation to my class. Such timing! Love the one tiny silken thread that keeps them attached! Awesome capture!

Great shot. This is such an interesting process to experience. A few years ago we brought back some childhood memories by bringing a chrysalid home. The birth of our butterfly "Henry" was so fun to watch!
