Photo taken of four objects which differed in colour only. The original photograph of the objects was off-set so the objects did not impart the same proportion of colour each. This created an unbalanced, but I think pleasing, colour mix when rotated in a processing filter. It took quite a lot of experimentation to get the right colour balance I have got here.
The unique texture of the vortex is created from the surface of the photographed objects.

@swilde - The original colours of the objects I photographed were slightly different to this. By playing with the white balance I managed to get these colours from what were quite muddy base colours. However, that took a lot of shots and it was quite difficult. I am not sure that muted colours would be easy with these objects. I might have another go with something else. However, the texture is so nice on these. It gives a sort of 'rushing' look to the shot which suites what I was trying to achieve.
Very clever. Wouldn't know where to begin with something like this. You've managed to give the image integrity - if I attempted something like this I suspect it'd end up looking like a dog's dinner!
