At my camera club tonight I ran a practical session. One of the things we did was to teach the members how to do light orbs. Here is one of the few pictures I managed to snatch whilst teaching. I set the picture up for myself and then did the swirling. It worked out OK. Everyone seemed to have had fun! That's what it is all about.

@brumbe - the key to the whole thing is swirling... it is the easiest thing to try, but difficult to get right. Practice is all that is required to make it work, but consistency is the key. I will be publishing a tutorial about this on my new website hopefully to go live in about three weeks.
@mwarren365 - Yes, Mike. this was a 15 second exposure at F10 and ISO100. The cross in the window and the light thrown onto the ground is quite dim, but it is worth a long exposure to get them. So it worked out well. If you look here you can see it without the orb... http://365project.org/netkonnexion/365/2011-03-29
This is so awesome! I WILL do this correctly someday! I hope you will share your tutorial. I love the orb and the cross and shadows! Perfect place to a shot like this!
You know what I love about this.....?
The cross and the shadow it casts, that in itself would have been an awesome shot:)
I do like the orb though, still have to give this one a try
that looks really neat! i wouldnt mind having someone teach me how to do creative light tricks like this!! i really like the shadow from the window of the bulding too! kewl shot!
really cool!!! I was on a night shoot with a Flickr group last summer and one of the people there did the orb for us to shoot, my first time and I was pretty happy with it. This is so fun, nice shot, I like the light of the cross with it.
do you have to do this with a dslr or can this be done with a point and shoot? i should like to be able to do this, too! can't wait to see your website.
