RAW editing is quite tough Newbank as when you shoot jpeg's your camera has done lots of adjustments to make it nice. RAW is supposed to be the digital negative and you then go and do your thing with it. I've only recently started shooting RAW on my DSLR's, my compact doesn't do RAW. I think the benefit of RAW is you can bring out more details e.g. recovering highlight details and shadow details. Anyway you done a good job here . Stick with it, oh and set your camera to RAW+ Large JPEG, then you have the best of both worlds, you can then edit which one you like (although your memory card image capacity reduces dramatically !
I do as Phil says, and shoot in RAW and Jpeg. That way, I can easily see what the photos are in my files, but have the RAW image for processing. This has really great detail on those flowers.
I've been shooting in RAW only since the beginning of the year and using LR too. I found it hard to begin with, but if you stick with it you will begin to find your favourite tools for working with each photo - mine are adjusting the shadows using the Tone Curve and the contrast. How are you getting on with your Mac?
I like the details you've brought out in the cosmos and the colours are lovely. Love the grouping of 3 too.
Hard to know if you have improved it if we can't see the jpeg. RAW is all about taking control rather than letting the camera make the decisions. Unlike the jpeg, manipulation is non destructive and reversible. Worth persevering. Oh and the detail in the petals here is really nice. Not sure I like the bee because it pulls my eyes away, although i can see that you might not care for empty space there,.
I quite like it. And good on you for trying out something new. I have not attempted using RAW yet and feel a little scared by it, so I am totally impressed with this!
I think you got some nice detail on the cosmos which you might not have got in a JPEG. Love the comp, pov and blurry bee, lovely bokeh too, fav for me!
Love the colors in this, so think you did a great job with the processing of the raw! It can be a bit tricky in the beginning, but you can get way better results when you get the hang of it then when you just use the jpeg. just practise a lot!
Well done on your first RAW processing! Just persevere and you will soon get used to it. You really can get so much more detail out of a shot than with jpeg.
