April - New Toy by newbank

April - New Toy

My new toy is an old toy. An Olympus OM20. It was one of my Grandfathers cameras. My Dad found it whilst sorting out some belongings at my Grans house. It has a variety of lenses. You tube helped me figure out how to open it up and put a roll of film in! Not used a film camera for a long time! I've already this morning shot 12 images. 12 suddenly seems a huge amount and what if I messed them up? Made me stop and think. Eldest wanted to see the image of him straight away and doesn't get he won't for a while! If he can view anything at all. Hopefully I'll get something worth posting and will scan to put up here.

Messing them up is part of the fun , when getting the film processed , just get it scanned to disc. It's cheaper and you can edit them. I have the om10 , they are a great camera and you could use the lenses on your digital camera if you get an adapter , about 10 to 15 pounds on ebay. You will have to manually focus but it's great to play around with....

@jack4john he also had an om10 as well....that might be coming my way too! Got a lovely collection lenses. A 50mm, 35mm, 28mm, 35-70mm and a 135mm. Thanks for advice on scanning. Who do use to process? An irish place or somewhere might access in uk? Im excited by it all!

There are Fuji shops in most towns in Ireland, Booths also process . Its 6.99 euro to develop to disc for each film here , I'm usually happy to get 4/5 good pic off any film...

Well worth putting it back into use. My first serious slr was the om10 which I got some good shots from years ago.

Oh how exciting! Hope you get some good pics from it. Have fun. I sold my two film cameras and now wish that I hadn't!

Your grandfather's camera! I used only one of these on what seems like other day shooting my daughter. Whoops? She now has school age boys. And I'm a grandfather! I'm sure it was only yesterday?

Lovely capture and it must be a good camera to be able to take a picture of itself.

You'll have a lot of fun with this oldie Ruth. Film seems to be making a bit of a comeback.

Nice! Look forward to seeing the results. Limited options in Aberystwyth, so I now get Palm Laboratory in Birmingham to process and scan to disc. I have used them for printing large black and whites for a while now.

oooohhhhh can't wait to see what you produce!

How exciting Ruth.....all these older cameras are very in vogue now, my grandson loves a proper film camera! Each shot was so important & I can still remember getting the envelope with processed photos & being so disappointed with some!

Enjoy the new 'old' camera!

I bet it's got a lovely 'clunk' in your hand when the shutter goes... yes, being limited to 24 or 36 photos does make you consider each shot a little more! Have fun!

@littlequeenie The "clunk" is fab!
