HELP Please......

Soooo I had a go with my new camera this morning, slightly con fuddled by post shooting focus (what???), figured out how to switch that off.... now discovered that as a lightroom 6 user my new camera is not supported so can't upload raw files anymore. Lightroom 6 was having a fair few tantrums too in life so think it might time to look at something else. I used a very very early edition of photoshop at one point that was out for free back in 2014ish then had lightroom 6 since about 2015ish. Anyone with any knowledge able to give advice on cloud subscriptions to adobe? Lightoom? Photoshop? Combination?
@taffy Any technical advice at all? Sure read that you've had lightroom/technical/computer issues recently...?
@jgpittenger Any suggestions? i've always had the impression you are knowledgable?

I love the use of negative space here. Fav.

Hi there! Congrats on the new camera and sympathy with the transitions required! First thing I'd recommend is go with the subscription to LR and PS -- there's a photographer's bundle that I use and it's been really helpful. I fought the idea of a subscription but eventually gave in and it's been a good decision. There are a ton of tutorials for the newest versions of both LR and PS and they are very useful. B&W is as good with LR now as SilverEfex which I've used forever. I can't stand Adobe as a company, but in the end, it's been the best system to use both for photo storage and for processing. I've been learning more about color through a course I've been taking that emphasizes processing in PS and that's also been a big help. I know there are other options out there that may be less expensive. In the end, I thought Adobe's staying power with LR and PS was worth it. Let me know if there's anything else I can do re suggestions. Your work is SO good, it deserves a good processing program.

@taffy Thank you so much for taking time to reply. Really helpful. I have downloaded 7 day trial to have a look at it. My laptop doesnt support some of it so now need to figure that out too.... Your response a few others makes me more sure of doing the package and subscription. Thanks.

@taffy I also really like the idea of tutorials etc.

@newbank Adobe has tons of tutorials, and there are many many other free ones. Junko and I did the MattK one for PS -- he has one for both. I can send the link if you can't find it. Those we had to pay for, though, and there are lots of free ones. I ended up replacing my older laptop this year with a new MacBook pro 16". It's quite a luxury to have a larger screen and it's wonderful for processing without having to commit to a stationary desktop. It looks months to come in, but I'm loving it.

@taffy Updated laptop systems so have been able to get lightroom and photoshop downloaded... all set now I think! Kind of exciting :)

I like this shot and the idea of the LR PS bundle but need a new lens first!

I concur with the decision to go with LR/PS. I have been using them ever since Adobe switched to a subscription format. (Prior to that I couldn’t afford PS so used Elements). I have tried other programs but in my opinion nothing beats the LR/PS combo. The learning curve is a little steep, especially in Photoshop, but as you have already discovered, there are many tutorials out there. One I can recommend for Photoshop is “Phlearn: 30 days of Photoshop”. There are many other Phlearn tutorials but this one is a good one to start with. Happy editing.

i use open source software it's free and leading state of the art.

For Raw processing : Darktable or Rawtherapee
Then any other adjustments in GIMP

Works for me

The creative cloud photographer’s selection ( LR, PS, camera raw) are amazing. The learning curve is steep and it helped me a lot that I had a puppy when I started learning them cause she demanded I be home more and less out shooting. I like Matt’s LR and PS classes but, as Taffy points out, you do have to pay for them. I know there are lots of free classes available but Matt’s are well organized and decrease the sense of it being too complicated to understand

@jgpittenger Thank you Jane

Nice- I would have moved the bird a bit more into one of the 3rd quadrants :)

Thank you for asking the question. I'm still using LR5! I'm wanting to make jump (and but new camera), but I'm afraid of losing my current library. Will watch your progress, and hopefully I'll get the nerve up to do it too!

@darylo Have started trial, the photography package has a desktop lightroom classic (old lightroom) AND lightroom and photoshop on desktop, some mobile stuff not looked at AND then lightoom on the web. I have started some tutorials on them and they are good. When I installed Lightoom classic to desktop it asked me if I wanted to transfer over my old lightroom 6 catalog. Why dont you do as I have and have a 7 day trial and have a download and a play?

@darylo Oh and having tried I will be staying with the package. Wanted to check it would all work with camera and laptop! Taken some updating and downloading but all there now.

@newbank so did you do the package with LR classic or the one with cloud storage (which I assume you can download to your computer for storage as well?). I have adopted over the years some very BAD backup systems and I'm so afraid I have some LR stored in a place I can't access (also a backup hard drive died with lots of stuff on it). But I know my computer is getting full and I need a solution!

@darylo https://www.adobe.com/uk/creativecloud/photography/compare-plans.html
I have the Photography plan 20GB. I have lightroom classic AND ( a bit of cloud storage). Seemed very easy to change plan once set up so will up the plan when storage needs require it.

@darylo I have VERy bad back up systems and lost years of stuff when my computer did something.... I now just make sure I print photos of the kids out periodically so there is always a real life copy.
