Spent a long time today photographing this while the sun was out.
Struggled to get the focus I wanted. Guess I was too close, may have needed a different lens, am going to try this again, assuming the sun does actually come out again!
Nice! If you use a tripod then try using Live View and magnify it 10x to allow you to get the focus that you want (plus you can afford to use a smaller aperture to get a deeper depth of field)
Wonderful news that you have managed to get Friday off! @padlock was going to meet me at Somerset House at 10:45 but now that you are going to be collecting your new toy, I would suggest that we meet at Park Cameras at about the same time - I am assuming that you want to go to the London Branch?
@nicolaeastwood I'll be there. @padlock, don't forget to bring that fully charged battery so Nicola can get cracking straight away. Nicola, don't forget to bring a bag big enough to carry the boxes around in! The British Museum is just up the road so there is plenty of scope for Nicola to sit down and look through the goodies (and @padlock and I can wander and shoot some pictures) before we decide on going somewhere else.
If you want to meet earlier then I am in London from some ungodly hour (I will accompany my wife to her office and be there for 7a.m.) but I will leave that choice to you. It might be silly hat time again (for recognition purposes and to keep my bonce warm!)
@steampowered@padlock It's reserved! :0). British museum sounds fab! Will stick with 10.45 meet if that's okay can then drop Little D at school and head on up to town. Excited!
@nicolaeastwood That is brilliant. I suggest picking up your new toy and then heading for the BM because it is big, undercover, there should be seats available then you can unpack, and play to your hearts content. Do you have a suitable storage card (Compact Flash Type I (UDMA compatible), SD/SDHC/SDXC according to dpreview.com)? Are you buying the body only in which case you will need an EF lens (but I am sure that @padlock or I can loan you one if you want).
@steampowered@padlock Errrrr......hold on!...... :0)
I'm very excited, although I woke up last night with a start thinking.....how much?......on a camera?.....what am I doing!!.....yes have checked and it is the deal that's on the web site. Will need to buy a memory card too! thanks for all your good advice!
@nicolaeastwood Buy a fast memory card! The 5D MkIII supports UDMA 7 which is seriously fast. A recent review said "Boy did it help. I was noticing roughly double the shots when I just kept the shutter down and let it shoot - but perhaps more importantly, the time to clear the buffer dropped even more significantly - from 15 seconds to about 4 or 5."
Slightly pricey but I have two of them in my 1D-X and I can basically keep my finger on the shutter button for a heck of a long time before the camera slows down and then it is only seconds to flush the buffer and you are back to shooting at full rates again!
I don't think it's your focus, I think the bright sunlight is creating too much contrast. Try a bit of fill flash or a reflector to lighten the shadows. And be careful of using too small an aperture; you might run into diffraction effects ( http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/diffraction-photography.htm). You could try a wider aperture and focus stacking, which is fairly easy (but slow) in Photoshop.
