This rusty old eye was part of the plans to save this great nation from an invasion by Hitler's Forces during WWII.
It sits a-top one of the huge concrete domes that formed part of the GHQ line (General Headquarters Line) which aimed to stop German tanks rolling straight up-country to London. This particular one is on the Basingstoke Canal in an area where the line was most heavily fortified.
There are lots of these marching across the fields, a metal line would have connected them - would they have stopped an invasion I wonder? I can't help images of Dad's Army cropping up in mind when I try to imagine it.
There are pill boxes visible here too, become rather overgrown now though. let's hope they are preserved for generations to come. Part of the planning that has gone in locally to build 315 houses on a greenfield site involves destroying two of these historic buildings, I hope we can defeat it.
Such a lovely day we cycled along the canal, saw a heron - got some shots, but they don't work well in B&W!
Thank you...and in the background you should just be able to hear the soundtrack "...Mummy....my legs are tired, when are we going home!?! I'm hot....I'm thirsty...I'm tired!" and that was just Clive! @padlock
