Sooooo... for this week's instalment of "get pushed" Lesley (@kiwichick) challenged me to: "try some candid portraits, in colour. I'd like to see your subject close up so if you have a long lens that would help."

This is a random stranger... i kind of liked how the framing worked out and that the background isn't too crazy...

I have to confess that i really struggle with portraits in general... i don't do 'em because i don't get 'em... to me, a photo requires context and it is extremely rare that i can get interested in a picture of a person that does not have some context... i know i could take candids of my kids (Lesley offered this up as a suggestion), but then i struggle with the distinction between a candid portrait vs. a candid action shot (my kids are perpetual motion machines) and as you can see, i just tangle myself up in knots...

Sigh...

Another train shot in my main album if you are at all interested:

Thank you so much for the views, comments and favs on my ghost witch... I did have fun with that one!

I am afraid I am very behind in commenting... work and kids' homework and kids' sports are dragging on me in the worst way... however, I am determined to catch up on the weekend... please bear with me?

@kiwichick not sure this is quite what you had in mind... an excellent push for me as it's definitely alien and uncomfortable territory for me!

People scare me. I don't like portraits, etc. But, the long lens will help break down that barrier. I know what you mean about needing subject and context for guidance. So many do WYSIWYG in street photography, but it is too random for me now. Nice start with this one.

Very nice candid! I do like the colors! They stand out against the darker tones around him. :)

Using a long lens means you have to keep it so still so this one is nice and focused!

He he, you're right. It's not quite what I had in mind. Great effort for giving it a go and stepping out of your comfort zone. I know my effort wasn't quite what you had in mind either. I do think it's a great start and if you do feel like attempting another shot over the weekend I'd love to see it. I bet you could catch those kids of yours at a quite moment amidst all their action ;) I am still planning on taking another shot for your push, as I really want to give the low key concept a go.

Nice candid street capture. I am with you totally...don't do people well on camera and street photography scares me...unlike you that has that part nailed!
