target practice

for camera / lens comparison purposes only... prolly should've changed the aspect ratio on the olympus before i did this... oh well...
@taffy - not sure this really illustrates the differences very well other than the reach... the sony ends up being a bit washed out as i don't have a circular polarizer for it (and actually, i'm not sure you can attach one)...

So you can get a fairly wide look even with the 4:3? That's my main hesitation. I use a FF and had worried the 4:3 would limit architectural and landscape, but it doesn't look that way at all. I do use a polarizer. But am guessing I could deal with that in post production. Thanks for posting this. I'll send a followup via email later tonight or tomorrow night. Madly packing up as we leave to Chicago/Evanston tomorrow morning. Moderately depressed tonight.

@taffy hi Taffy - yes - so far i'm not finding the 4/3 sensor to be limiting in any way... i hope your move went ok and you're not feeling to blue about it at all...

@northy Junko and I had fun tonight getting organized for upcoming photo trip in Hawaii so definitely helped with depression! Not fun will be looking for place to live -- fortunately no rush to do it this month. Probably best not to borrow your camera until after returning from photo course. Too much to take already and thinking not good to be working with new camera. I'll chek in again on that in early October, though, if still available.

What a good idea.. even if you can't draw any firm conclusions. I am now also learning the joys of using the E-m5 II. For now I've set it to 1:1 b&w!

asuming your LR & camera settings were as similar as possible, does the Sony sensor handle the dynamic range in dark tones really well (see the detail in the lower r rocks), but light tones badly - blown out sky & less detail in water? Would you compensate by exposing that camera -0.5 under ? ( but maybe focal length lens distortion and contrast may be a confounder??)

@ltodd hmmm... I was blaming the lack of a circular polarizer... I often under expose a bit regardless... Except in winter snow when I set ev to +something... But it never really occurred to me to look think about how the sensors were handling light on a comparison basis... Something to think about...
