I looked up these old pictures for @sunnygreenwood Anne just posted a picture from her recent trip to Tian An Men square in Beijing. My husband and I got to China to attend Beijing Teacher's College in August of 1987 and in September we noticed a big plus and minus sign on a building and figured it might be a math institute, but then started seeing + - everywhere. Turns out it is character for ten, one (October first) National Day. So we spent all day in a crowded square, checking out everything from parades, to fireworks to sculpted hedges like pagodas and the Great Wall. We had a height advantage over the locals, So the view was pretty good.
We were there in 2006. China (and the Great Wall) was a bucket list for me. Absolutely loved the time we spent there and in Beijing. A second bucket list trip for us both is coming up -- another trip to South America, this time cruising and seeing penguins and Iguassu Falls Photo to follow when we return home.
