London History

A classic shot - from Greenwich Park, looking over the Queen's House to the former Royal Naval College, then beyond to Canary Wharf and The City. A history spanning at least 400 years (and that's discounting anything below ground!).

In the foreground is The Queen's House, built in the early 17th Century for Queen Anne, wife to James I.

Just beyond is the site of the 15th Century Greenwich Royal Palace, later replaced by what is now the old Royal Naval College (originally the Royal Seaman's Hospital - dating from the early 17th Century).

In the distance (and across the River Thames) is Canary Wharf and to the left of this some of the tower blocks in the City of London financial district. Canary Wharf and the surrounding buildings are a development on some of the old London docks (now known as London Docklands), which were part of the Port of London, once the world's largest port.
An excellent view of architecture over the years. As the years go by the buildings get taller. I can think of nothing worse than living or working in a high rise, especially after the recent fire in the high rise in London.
Even though the tall buildings look quite elegant, I still prefer the old architecture, much more character.

@onewing I agree. As you can see from the cranes, they're still building 'em!
