Any advice welcome: this is clearly backlit with an off-camera flash. How do you avoid sending the background into darkness (as here), whilst still retaining that backlit effect? I thought of fill-in flash from the camera but the pop-up flash is, of course, prevented by the external flash fitting.
If your picture is backlit the background will be dark. You can avoid having a dark background by placing a light in front to light up the background too, but then you wouldn't get the backlit effect so it would defeat the object of the exercise I think.
I think the background is perfect.
