Things can't be rushed on the canal. The maximum speed of travel is 4mph, but even this is a hopeful aspiration in many places due to the circumstances, topography and environment.

A marvel of engineering are the canal locks. Canals were designed to move goods over long distances, and to do this they had to go up and down hills. The solution to this conundrum were locks. Going up or down a lock is an intricate manoeuvre which requires about equal measure of skill, ingenuity and brute strength. Meanwhile, the guy driving the boat has plenty of time to take photos...
