Guy Fawkes' Night; mostly forgotten now in favour of Halloween, and, given the religious tension Guy Fawkes evokes, probably quite rightly. But I was raised celebrating Guy Fawkes' Night and don't want to let it go. It all started with a certain Thomas Cromwell and the dissolution of the monasteries...
Ah, the dissolution of the monasteries. I very nearly wrote my Master's thesis on the topic. :) And the 5th of November? Well, I know a thing or two about the Gunpowder Treason - and I love that the movie V for Vendetta retold the story for so many people. More so, probably, than the original graphic novel. But in any case, I'll see if I can find those novels you're recommending and get reading! .)
absolutely topical .........perfect and wonderful photo.......what more can i say?!!.have to say have never read Sansom, how lovely another author to devour!!
@fannyb Yes, I think he's worth the time. Also did a lovely novel about the Spanish Civil War. Dissolution is a great read if you like historical fiction. By the way, have you discovered Carlos Ruiz Zafón yet? "The Shadow of the Wind" - worth a try...
Nice photo Peter, very effectively lit. No idea what Halloween is all about - All souls something or other but whats that to do with witches on broomsticks, pumpkins or children begging, if not threatening, door to door? And if witches on broomsticks are central to this aren't we demonising women? Do away with both 'celebrations' I say!
@bardejov He was a Catholic accused of plotting to blow up Parliament in 1605. Set up job if you ask me - like the burning of the Reichstag in Germany a few centuries later to discredit and justify the persecution of others! No cause for celebration that's for sure.
