Turning Pages...a book club for the homeless that meets every Tuesday at the central library in uptown Charlotte. Local businesses supply copies of the month's book selection and refreshments/meals. Last month the club read one of my all time favorite books, "The Art of Racing in the Rain". The author, Garth Stein, came to take part in the discussion. I think I need to get involved with this very cool group and see life from a different perspective.
This is a filler photo that I took on my way to a photography class last month. But I thought the story behind this photo was something to be shared.
What a great story - fantastic idea - it would be great to be involved with a book club with a difference! Can't help but feel a great contrast with my shot today....

What a great idea, Peggy. I would never have imagined such a thing but now that I think about it it makes so much sense. Would be good if this idea could spread.

What a fabulous idea! It makes me wonder if something like that exists in other cities. Think I'll check it out. Thanks for sharing, Peggy.

A simple idea that will give great pleasure to anybody unfortunate to be homeless ! Thanks for telling us about it !

Wow, cool group. And here I thought it looked like a drug deal going down before reading the caption. I loved, loved, loved that book, too. How did you find out about this?

@moly There was an article in the St. Peter's newsletter a few months ago. Several of their parishoners attend the meetings. I knew they met from 10 to 11 am on Tuesdays so I walked by the library before class to check it out.

Neat - and I loved that book too - I am sure the author was thrilled to know they were reading his book.

What a wonderful idea. It's a great way to help pass some time that I'm sure can be more than a little slow for many homeless people, and it gives them a great opportunity to get together and have some great conversation. I may write to a couple places around here and suggest that idea. I really really like it.

Quite interesting.

What a great candid and even better idea.....I'm sure a program like this could make such a huge impact in the lives of so many unfortunate people who might not otherwise have easy access to books.

What an incredibly philanthropic thing to do! Thanks for sharing - the public library just gets better all the time.

Peggy, I'm just looking at this photo for the second time. First time around I was focused on your story and the peeps. This time I'm looking at the photo and it's wonderful. The little bit of foliage at the top gives me the feeling that you are doing a bit of "stalking" and the different textures and lines in the brickwork add a lot of interest.

@barbsmith Oh, thanks, Barb! I appreciate the kind comments. I'm planning on joining their book club at some point. I think it could be an enlightening experience. I'm also hoping to get back to my camera at some point. Haven't really been able to take any photos since Easter. My crazy disease is trying to show me who's boss...just when I start to think I've got things under control. Oh well, just a temporary setback. I'll be back with the 365 gang soon. I miss you guys. :)

@peggysirk MIss you too. I was wondering (and worrying) this morning about where you had been. Hope you're feeling better soon.

I love that there’s something like this for homeless people. I would never have guessed. Have you attended a meeting? I like the contrast between what the photo looks like it’s about and what it really is. Great capture.

What a great concept. The shot is very telling as well. Hope you are feeling better. I am a little behind on my comments as I have been entertaining my nephew for a week.
