Close Call

It looks like this little guy barely escaped the clutches of a predator. Something took a big bite out of his lower left quarter. In the tradition of 365ers who are so good about identifying their photo specimens, I looked this up and believe it to be a Great Spangled Fritillary butterfly...or we could just call it "Lucky". :)
"Great Spangled Fritillary" ... what a beautiful name for a butterfly! I'm glad it survived its ordeal

Isn't it great to be able to see these little creatures so close up, and share them with others. lovely

Oh that's posh Peggy - looks big too. I hope that wasn't a naughty cat...

I'm starting to think that you have Mike Tyson living in your neighborhood. Between your kitty's ear and this little guy's wing...ouch!
Thank you for your nice comments on my photos, and my profile picture. Don took that picture this week when we were out hiking by a rocky river. I hate having my picture taken, but I'm trying really hard to get over it. Ugh! And my fish isn't going to be dinner tonight, but it's all cleaned and in the freezer for another night. They are actually really good with a light batter and thrown in a deep fryer for a couple minutes. Not a "fishy" taste at all. Nice white meat. He's still pouting!! It's a bummer that Tom didn't catch a fish when he went specifically for fly fishing. Hopefully he had a great time anyway. When guys get together they usually do. I have missed you my friend! I'm headed to the Carolinas next May for my nephew's wedding. Maybe I will take a couple extra days and travel to Charlotte to say "hello". :D

Wow--what a bizarre and interesting looking butterfly. Really cool textures and details too. Lucky indeed

Beautiful photo of Lucky. Actually, the reason so many of them have damaged wings is often to do with mating rituals and other battles. Not many of them escape with their wings in perfect condition! Some of our butterflies have fights with birds and often get damage in the process. Love the furry body on this little one; you've captured it beautifully.

@petersonsheri I will be very disappointed if you come to NC without including a pass through CLT!

@girlie Thanks for the good info, Robin. I was worried that this little butterfly was in serious trouble with that tail notch...but after he rested for a bit he flew away gracefully to live another day.
