We have been besieged by cicadas this summer. Charlotte area cicadas are part of Brood XIX, also known as the Great Southern Brood, that emerges in the Carolinas and 12 other states in the South and Midwest every 13 years...after living underground feeding on the roots of trees. The noise they make can be rather annoying ~ a loud, electronic-sounding whirring chorus. Then there are the exoskeletons (pictured) that seem to be everywhere. Oh well, guess the good thing is they won't be back till 2024. :)
For the first time I can remember in ages (and at our cottage) I am hearing cicadas at home now too. I put it down to the intense heat and humidity we're having in the Greater Toronto Area. I agree they are annoying and LOUD. I had never seen one of the little beasts before, thanks for the explanation and the cool pic..!
I might be weird but I love the sound of cicadas, even when it's deafening. Remind me of my childhood and always represent summer. Love the textures in this shot.
We have lots of those here too, but we get them every year! I am always afraid they are going to land in my hair. lol. Love the detail you captured with this little bugger!
