Mr. McMillan's Potatoes by peggysirk

Mr. McMillan's Potatoes

I know that these potatoes were grown by farmer McMillan because our local grocery store chain has recently implemented a "Locavore" program. They have started getting some produce from local, independent farmers. The name of the farm, its location, and distance from the store are all listed along with the price on the store info cards. I love that the grocery store is doing this and I hope they'll expand the program to include more produce, dairy products, eggs, etc. It's cool knowing that these guys were grown on McMillan's Farm, near a little North Carolina town 235 miles (378 km) from the store.
That's about all I have for today. But I'm so far behind I had to post something. :) Will play catch up tonight while I'm watching the Australian Open (tennis). Hope you've all been well ~ looking forward to seeing what everyone has been up to...
i think this is a wonderful shot and a fabulous idea to support local farmers .

I like local stuff with a name on as well - mind you 235 miles is the other side of the country in the UK! Come on Murray!! (He's not out already is he?)

@judithg Your boy Andy is still very much in the mix, Judith. He dispatched one of our American hopefuls, Ryan Harrison, in the first round. He faces Edouard Roger-Vasselin (France) in the next round which I think is tonight here ~ tomorrow in Melbourne. Shouldn't be much of a problem match for Murray.
Yes, 235 miles isn't "local" by your standards, is it? :) But it's about 2,000 miles closer than the potatoes I would usually buy from Idaho. We cover a lot of land mass over here. :)

And half our veg come form Spain or Kenya so anywhere England is local!

It's a fabulous idea putting produce information on stuff & I am all for it !! It's funny how every thing looks more appealing when you know a bit about the farmer !! We have some cheeses in supermarkets that have a farmers photo on & I'm sure they will sell more...it becomes more personal some how !! Come on Andy !!!

That's a great idea! I will print up some labels next summer for our tomatoes. I think they are about 35 feet from our table!!

Love the idea of local food and make every effort I can to either grow my own, buy from local farmers or shop at stores that make that effort. Not always an easy task. Great photo as well. Love the tones and the texture of the mat (or whatever they are displayed on). (I was getting a little concerned about you this week. Hope all is well).

@bpaquette There is nothing like a luscious, homegrown tomato in the summertime!! I used to grow my own in ATL, but between the squirrels and my dog, Toby, who loved to sneak-pick and eat them right off the vine, I got very little usable crop for my efforts. :) Here, in urban CLT, I'd have to grow them in pots...and anything potted around here tends to get stolen at some point. But I do get summer produce from the local urban farmers market and everything there is grown within 50 miles of here ~ and super delicious!

@barbsmith Thanks, Barb ~ a bit of a set back this week, but I'm fighting through it. :) Just hate that it puts me behind keeping up with everyone on 365 and makes me appear disinterested...which is far from the case. I know from your photos that you are totally into fresh, natural, homegrown...and I have to admit that I'm more than a little bit envious of your fabulous garden space! I think you and @bpaquette could put Martha Stewart to shame! :)

@peggysirk sorry tohear of a set back. That just stinks. We all know you are far from disinterested.

That’s really cool that the grocery store is making the effort to not only stock, but label local produce. How did you manage to make a photo of potatoes look so interesting?
