@happypat Pat, there were five bushels of oysters and about 40 people at the party. Plenty for all! I probably had 2 dozen...or so. :) @bpaquette Barbara ~ they were steamed and oh so good!! But there was also awesome chili for non-oyster eaters. Best chili I've ever had. :)
@suesmith There are a couple of ways to eat steamed oysters, Sue. Some people like to put them on a cracker with seafood/cocktail sauce. I just like to shuck them open with an oyster knife and put a little cocktail sauce on top and eat them straight from the shell. It's a little messy, so it's all done outside. The oysters are laid out straight from the steam pot onto a big table with holes in the middle that you toss the shells into...there are big baskets/cans to catch the shells.
@judithg I was going to say I believe she eats like a horse but thought better of it .....in case you haven't heard Peggy we have had trouble with horse meat!!!!
Sounds like fun, but I'm not altogether convinced that I could eat a raw oyster. It would be nice to see a photo of people eating at the tables with the holes in next time you go to an oyster roast Peggy.
Great photo. Love the texture from those bags. We once lived in Daytona Beach, Florida and had a source for buying oysters by the bushel - $13 washed, $12 unwashed. Does that tell you how long ago it was. Sounds like a great party.
