BioHazard Spill by peggysirk

BioHazard Spill

I accidently knocked over my open 'sharps container' yesterday, sending used syringes all over my bathroom counter and floor. A very creepy sight. Today I've been online and on the phone getting medical waste disposal info since my pharmacist no longer handles sharps disposal due to the increasing cost. I found out from the Coalition for Safe Community Needle Disposal that in North Carolina it is legal to put them in the trash...as long as they are in a sturdy plastic container, like a laundry detergent bottle, that is sealed and marked Do Not Recycle. A more responsible method for disposal is the Sharps Mail In Disposal Program. For $35 - $100, depending on container size, I can mail my used syringes to a medical waste facility for proper disposal. I just ordered my first mail-in kit.

Three good things:
1. A problem solved
2. The sun is shining!
3. A month from today I'll be on the sunny beaches of Bermuda and will have more interesting things to photograph than spilled syringes. :)
Life is a box full of surprises. You have handled it well. Look forward to your Bermuda pictures. I was there some seven years ago and enjoyed it very much.

Good for you, glad you got it figured out. Great shot to go along.
My brother is a water treatment engineer and their big problem these days is from drugs in the water supply, both from people who flush unused drugs down the toilet or sink and from remnants in human waste. Kinda scary when you think of all the drugs, legal and illegal, that people take.

Wow Peggy, amazing to see Liz Earle stuff in your bathroom..... all the way to North Carolina from the UK!
Spilled syringes makes a good photo all the same...you can't say we don't cover every subject!!

@happypat Thanks to your photo way back, Pat, I have been a Liz Earle fan. I especially love the wonderful little washcloths that come with each order. :)

@peggysirk Yes I do too, I must admit I have run out of cleanse & polish at the moment, I now love the Super skin Concentrate...does wonders for my dry skin at night & the smell is divine. Expensive but lasts ages & no I am not on commission!!! LOL!

The reason you are my friend, is because you can knock over a container of items that you have to use to keep a decent life for yourself and what do you do, you take a picture of them...LOL,, I am so glad we met....

I need some bottles of energy in my bathroom! It takes me back to sending a lot of our lab waste for recycling (autoclaved first) and then finding out that the company rep was chucking it in landfill which was against the law for autoclaved waste - he nearly lost his job (and in fact, scarily it would have been on my say so) but I felt that there was fault on the part of the purchaser on our side of the transaction and assured them that I didn't want him sacked - much more value in re-education. Sorry - it's a long story - you just set me off with the price of safe disposal!

Great processing on this shot Peggy and I, like Judith, would like to have some bottled energy too! Bermuda sounds wonderful - I am very jealous.

@judithg I wouldn't recommend those Bath&Body Works aromatherapy products for energy as claimed...one is 'Orange and Ginger" body lotion and the other is hand soap ~ the scent is fantastic, but I find them to be much more calming than energizing. :) It's not easy navigating the course of bio-waste. Glad you gave your employee a second chance to get it right. I can't believe it's legal to dump used needles in NC landfills. The mail-in option seems so much better...but I hope I'm not paying to have someone else dump them in a landfill upon receipt.

@peggysirk Yes and it seems odd that you can dump non-autoclaved bodily fluids but not autoclaved, but that's the case here - presumably because you autoclaved it for a reason....

What an unusual chain of events. My whole day seems to have been like that....in search of surgical dressings and bran muffins. I need some energy, too. Do think of me when you are on the beach, sigh.

@sarasdadandmom Awww...I'm glad we met too, Terry!! You and Jane are two very special people!! And hey, we 365ers are always looking for a photo for the day...spilled syringes seemed to work. :)

@bpaquette I hope that used surgical dressing isn't considered medical waste. :)

I do think that eventually it is going to get tougher and tougher to dispose of things like this.
