It's been an especially hard winter for Pax, Scrappy's very feral friend. She refuses to come in the house; in fact, I've never even been able to touch her in the six years I've been feeding her. But my husband, Tom, assures me that she stays warm enough sleeping under the bar behind our house. I suppose with all of the pipes and heat ducts that's probably true. I do what I can and try to fatten her up with all the food she'll eat for extra warmth. It's certainly been working for me...time to attempt the new year weight loss resolution. :)
Three good things:
1. Babysitting Harper and Will later this morning
2. My brother, Jack, and nephew, Dawson, will be in town this afternoon for a weekend visit
3. Building a stack of pancakes that looks just like the front of the box...the weight loss resolution starts tomorrow :)
Wow, unbelievable a feral cat has been around 6 years. You are taking such good care of her! She is beautiful and looks so healthy! Love that shiny black fur.
@cimes1 I agree, Carole...almost seven years is a long time for feral survival. I think the average lifespan is about 5 years with all of the dangers they confront. Pax was trapped, spayed and released at a young age which I think has made a big difference in her overall health and well being.
The whole dynamic that goes on with your cats is so awesome. Scrappy, who tries to be this big tough guy, turns to mush around Harper. He may be the big soft reason (along with your yummy food) that Pax sticks close to home too. I've seen your photos of the two of them sitting together on your porch, and it's almost as if they just hang out and have conversations. If only we knew what they were saying. :)
Pancakes are my favourite & I always forget about them....no good for losing weight though. I bet even Pax would like a pancake. Poor boy he hasn't had many cuddles in his life but so good he has you to look after him. His fur looks in good condition though & he is enjoying his
breakfast.
Ahhhh, she's so sweet. I hope there are a lot more people like you who look after all the homeless animals during these cold winter months. Living in the country, we get a lot of cats dumped out here and they end up at our house or our neighbors, some become tame quickly and others never completely trust us enough to let us touch them.
@petersonsheri When Pax was abandoned/dumped at the bar as a kitten, Scrappy, who had been dumped there as a little guy few years prior, started watching over her. They are tight buds. :)
Bless her - look at those eyes. I think you're right about the spaying. - multiple pregnancies would be a disaster. Impossible to tame a feral cat I think - you are doing the next best thing.
breakfast.
