Edisto Island, SC
Henry Hutchinson was a well respected community leader and the son of a former slave. He built and operated the island's first black owned cotton gin in 1900. Hutchinson built this house at the time of his marriage to Rosa Swinton in 1885, and resided there until his death in 1940. His relatives lived in the home until 1980, at which point the vacant house began to fall into disrepair. Hutchinson's descendants, after more than a century of ownership, put the house up for sale. It has been purchased by the Edisto Island Open Land Trust. Plans are in the works (in collaboration with the Edisto Island Museum and the American College of Building Arts) to restore this wonderful home which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
