This little Yellow-rumped Warbler (I think) was taking a break from enjoying the mealworm/sunflower kernel suet.
Three Good Things:
1. My new Birds of North Carolina field guide
2. Pot roast cooking in the oven and smelling really, really good
3. Jennifer Brady in the women's final at the Australian Open
Fav for me - what a beautiful photo! It’s reminded me of Janathan Franzen’s ‘Freedom’ - one of the characters is a huge bird lover and gets a bit obsessed about loss of woodland and the sterility of lawns (& cats!). As an English garden lover I found it difficult because our gardens support huge numbers of birds but it changed my opinion about lawns (good to see the Cambridge colleges & parks developing huge wildflower areas) & about density of new housing etc among other things!
@judithg You have turned me on to my next book. Ordering it tonight. I read Franzen's novel, 'The Corrections', years ago. Cannot wait to start 'Freedom'. I think I might be morphing into that character with my increasing concerns about sterile lawns, dwindling pollinator population, invasive non-native flora, housing density, etc. ☺
@peggysirk I must read the Corrections - he has that weaving narrative of different characters of course but it’s a book that has really stayed with me. I noticed yesterday that there’s a flower opening in the wild flower meadow area that we laid last year (small - the turfs are a bit pricey but we’re excited by it!). In fact this has reminded me I’m going to to order more plug plants to go in other areas of the lawn - which is a long way from pure grass anyway though not by design!
