Ever since I read 'The Goldfinch' novel by Donna Tartt I've wanted to meet a goldfinch in real life. Not that there's a lot about this bird in the book, but somehow it ignited my interest. Neither that goldfinch is rare or hard to find, but in cities I've lived last few years it was never around.
So, this morning I was exceptionally glad to see a couple of them jumping around in grass. They were very cautious and timid, so I couldn't get very close, but I still somehow managed to capture one of them.
Nice catch. They are quite striking. We have them fairly frequently in the garden; I believe the increase in number of people putting out bird food has led to an increase in the goldfinch population across the UK.
