aka 'lilyturf' aka 'ophiopogon planiscapus nigrescens' and I found this: 'Also known variously as 'Black Dragon', 'Ebony Knight', or 'Arabicus', this is an extraordinary looking plant with purple-green leaves that turn jet black when grown in full sun and very well-drained soil.'
Think I'll stick to calling it black grass or could manage nigrescens!
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
@wordpixman I've always liked that: 'A rose by any other name..........' line. I could launch a competition ' A black grass by any other name would......'!
@tishpics Patricia, thank you, a question of using what little there is in the garden right now - and for a moment I thought I'd got a surreptitious selfie of me in the berry but heaved a sigh of relief!
Good macro shot. Love the shine on the berries.
We have quite a bit of this black 'grass' (another snap!!) all grown from one plant bought some time ago. Fortunately it looks lovely in the rain!!!!!!
@maggiemae In the summer they have, as precursor to the black berries, beautiful mauve/purple flowers. These black grasses spread like wildfire. http://365project.org/quietpurplehaze/add-ins/2012-07-25
Just remembered this link and I note that I have learnt something about names since then!!
Sorry Dear Hazel. My trick to copy names and go to Wikipedia to see the plant don`t work on this. For that I always use the Latin name and they are write : The fist name with a capital letter , second and third with no capital letter. ( W. gives movies. )
Now to the pic. It`s a beautiful close up and a wonderful capture. Love the composition.
@pyrrhula I've been thinking about your comments on flowers etc being early here and it made me reflect that we are quite a bit further south here than you are in Holland as we live in the extreme south of England, quite neat the coast. We also have a kind of micro-climate just here and are in the lee of, and sheltered, by the Isle of Wight.
