...we found an exhibition of sculpture including some pieces by Dame Elisabeth Frink, whose work I love.
At first Ray and I thought this beautiful bronze dog in the entrance hall was modelled on a chocolate labrador but not so:
He is 'Leonardo's dog' and "the title of the work was inspired by the stone dogs which guard and protect the entrance to the Chateau de Cloux near Amboise, Leonardo da Vinci’s home when he died in 1519."
This sculpture was created in the penultimate year of her life.
I also discovered that Elisabeth Frink (1930 - 1993) was, like us, a native of Suffolk.
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
Hazel, I think Ray spoils you with your outing's, no wonder you treat him to fantastic gastronomic delights, such as your roasts ! I reckon you enjoyed Mompesson House & the sculptures. I love the bronze dog.
There is an exhibition of sculpture at Mompesson House until Nov 2nd - 2 or 3 pieces of Elisabeth Frink's are featured, and also her beautiful 'Walking Madonna' is in the grounds of Salisbury Cathedral. So hard to photograph successfully and I've spent a good time post-processing my shot of it (rare for me!) so I shall post it, probably tomorrow - trying not to post so many pics as I get carried away with it...... I was glad to revive memories for you of your time in Salisbury!
Oh! Maybe this is the ferocious dog the sign was referencing on the gate yesterday?? Ha! (I think that was a different building, but still...) Nice capture and I like that you include the history. Very interesting!
Thank you, Patricia. I was just going to flag one up to you - no need now! I spent more time taking and processing shots of the Madonna than I've ever done of any other photo!
