I saw a few of these purple poppies in the gardens at Great Dixter: my favourite colour, great photo op!
Warm and sunny here today and Jinks and I went over the field before it got too hot. I didn't really intend going over the field but when we passed the gate as we walked along the green, Jinks stopped and looked so longingly that I hadn't the heart to pass by.
I read in the 'i' yesterday (a compact, concise version of The Independent packed with interesting stuff for 30p which is about what I think a daily paper is worth) that a remote tribe in Brazil has no word for 'month' or 'year' or 'time' in their language.
They talk in terms of one event happening after another but have no abstract concept of time as something separate or as a background in which things happen.
It strikes me to regard Jinks, and maybe all dogs, as very like that e.g. whatever time we have our evening meal, he knows that his treat comes after it and just expects it then.
Although, come to think of it, he can tell the time as yesterday, while I was having a small siesta, (only small you understand) I was woken by a bit of snuffling, followed by one small bark aimed at me and when I opened my eyes I saw it was 4.05 p.m. ( Jinks has his 'tea' at 4 p.m.)
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
Beautiful shot, great detail, and yes beautiful colour too. Its a bit disappointing that you made Jinks wait 5 minutes longer for his "tea" ;)
My dog Spud knows exactly when his dinner is ready, and barks very loudly until I feed him too.
What an awesome shot - it looks like it has a cream puff in the middle. It would be interesting to know how the other animals experience time. You coud set your watch by the horses waiting by the gate to come in each evening.
Super shot. Love it. Jinks is one very smart dog. Loved the story.
We used to have a cat, who whenever we had people over for dinner, used to go to the front door when it got late and scraped on the door to go out, two minutes later she scraped to come back in again. This carried on for a while and our friends would say what is she doing. I didn't have the heart to tell them that the cat thought it was time they went home because it was her bedtime.
A beautiful capture and your favourite colour too. Loved to hear about Jinks and your interesting discovery about time . Today I have bought a packet of poppy seeds my fingers are crossed for a few flowers at the end of summer .
Beautiful shot Hazel and a Fav. It's funny what you say about Jinks as Bas our cockatoo knows what time it is when he shouts for me to go and get him out of his cage to take him to bed in the morning. Also he waits for us to sit down and eat our breakfast and then he eats his at the same time!
That's a lovely bit of info about Bas! I love the idea of him eating breakfast at the same time as you. I'm sure we underestimate the animal (including bird) kingdom.
Love your beautiful flower, and I love hearing about Jinx as well! Dogs are such creatures of habit, it is amazing. My big Lab tells me it is his dinner time (if I am off schedule), by following me around the kitchen and laying on my feet as soon as I stop. He is so funny!
Lovely photo and comments on time. For the tribe, perhaps the passage of time and its marking (sunrise, sunset etc) is such a universal experience that they have no need for a word for it...

Thank you. Have I seen a photo of Spud?

Babs, that's priceless - thank you for sharing it!
Thank you - they look great. We had a Schnauzer at home when I was a child and I think that is right about Nez. Labs are so faithful.
I do that too!!!
Thanks for the great comment and the fav.

I wait in anticipate for shots! What colour will they be?
Thank you for the comment and fav. I'm glad I didn't bore you with my 'meanderings'!!
Sandy, thanks and I've only seen this one and the others which were on the plant with it. I should have noted the name.
Fab poppy shot :)
That's probably true - and I guess they don't have appointments with the dentist or hairdresser!
