Who remembers: by quietpurplehaze

Who remembers:

watching Bill and Ben, the flowerpot men on b&w TV
knitted tea cosies (just visible in foreground)
sandwiches with crusts cut off (we had to eat the crusts in our house)
a bowl of trifle on the sideboard
patterned carpets
companion set in the fireplace
school uniform?

If you do, you're probably my generation. This living room is kitted out 1950s style in Portsmouth City Museum. My eye was drawn by the little boy lolling on the floor - thought he was real at first glance. I've just noticed the camera on the high bookcase - looks a bit like my X20!
Everything is so memory provoking. Fav

The first house we owned have a fireplace just like that. We never removed it. All our friends hated it as it was dated. I though could see the hard work that had gone into owning it. The huge difference to life a gas fire would have made from a coal one. When we returned to visit our neighbours once I saw the fireplace as rubble in the yard outside. It saddened me slightly that the last remains of the couple that had lived their for 50 years had gone. I loved our first little terraced house, I would round to our elderly neighbour and she would tell me stories of what it was like to live on the street for the last 50 years. Sorry long ramble just that fireplace reminded me.

@newbank

I think it's great when 365 photos stir memories.

Stirred lots of memories for me. Sandwiches with crusts cut off! Not in our house!

@thistle

Maybe, than, a figment of the imagination of a member of staff creating this!

Oh yes, I was a child of the 60's/70's but we had to eat our crusts or our hair wouldn't curl - the fact that you might not want curly hair seemed to be completely irrelevant!

Yes that brings back memories. The boy does look so real. Crusts eaten, nothing wasted in our home too. Had a b & w tv fir yrs. My dad didnt want to change something that still worked. Happy kids when it finally gave up!

This reminds me of staying at my Nana's house. I always loved going there. That house was a real blast from the past. A very big fave from me for bringing back some great memories.

Fantastic shot, so much to see, I remember all of the above (showing my age now). I even remember bone handle knives, in fact we still have some which were my Mum's and they are still in use as butter knives.
September 30th, 2014
Fun memories! We didn't have a tv until later though.
September 30th, 2014
This is wonderful. Seems to be a week for memories as I was just discussing how we only had 3 TV channels and they signed off at the end of day. Fav for me!
September 30th, 2014
Oh yes Hazel. The tiled fireplace, the clock on the mantelpiece, the sideboards and that great modern invention, the television set, that changed the pattern of family living in the 1950s. My parents were so proud when they managed to update to such modernity.

... and are they plaster flying geese that I can just see on the wall?

Thanks for sharing - and have a Fav for the reminder!

I'm somewhat overwhelmed by all your comments, plus even some favs, on this post and never expected it to stir quite so many memories! It was also nice that some of you noticed things I hadn't in the living room! This is a fabulous museum with loads to see - very interesting. We've lived in the area for nearly 40 years and this was our first visit! Hooray for 365!

Wow that does take me back Hazel......how our houses have changed!i remember the Lino round the edge & carpet in the middle! Hot in front of the fire but our backs were freezing! Happy days all the same!
September 30th, 2014
Loved watch with mother; hated the ham sandwiches (still do) and the trifle (still do), I think we had that fireplace whilst I was growing up
September 30th, 2014
Great capture we took that fire place out of our house when we moved in. Dave our neighbour now for 20 something years said he know Mrs Perry the old lady we brought from was alive because he could hear her stoking the coal fire each morning
September 30th, 2014
Lovely bit of nostalgia, and yes I do remember all those things, thanks for the memories Hazel.
