The heavy rains brought the flood level in the crypt at Winchester Cathedral up to mid-calf on Sound II, Antony Gormley's statue made from a cast of his own body.
The post tops in the foreground are part of the fence to stop enthusiastic photographers et al, falling into the water. It was lapping at the front of the viewing platform.
I've taken numerous photos here as it fascinates me. This time I used the short end of my short zoom lens.
The solid and heavy door to the steps leading down was closed so I asked a guide for help and found that it was just to stop the cold seeping upwards into the cathedral.
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
Fabulous. I mentioned this Antony Gormley sculpture yesterday to David and here it is today on your 365. We had been discussing the Angel of the North and the Another Place sculptures but David didn't know about this one. Now I can show him. fav
Love the reflections. We have 51 Gormley sculptures at Lake Ballard, 780 km from Perth. I think I prefer the one in Winchester Cathedral to those at the lake. http://www.kalgoorlietourism.com/Lake-Ballard
Another fabulous shot of this crypt, I know it can not do any good having this level of water but it does make for a great picture!, another fav for me!
Looks very worse. Not only the damage now to been seen but also the stones damage that shows later. Remember our flood of 1953. The churches / and houses walls did show the damage years after it.
Great shot of you flood
Wow. Wonderful photo -- needs to be seen full-screen. It's very cool that photographers are allowed to see it; if only behind the fencing. I assume this happens rather regularly so -- I'm hoping -- little damage.
This is a rare sight hopefully Hazel. Must say the chance to see this is fantastic, not your normal run of the mill photo op! The reflections alone are wonderful & Mr Gormley looks creepy as he does on Crosby beach when the tide is coming in.
The reflection really fools you at first- but then you realize how high the water must be. Are they expecting there to be damage to the cathedral due to the flooding? I would think water in a crypt is not a good thing! fav
Wow! Great light, great focus, and great reflection. This shot really grabbed my attention, and I'm so glad you had the opportunity to get it, but I certainly hope that the flooding of the crypt won't endanger the overall structural integrity of the cathedral.

Babs, thank you - a close view here http://365project.org/quietpurplehaze/365/2014-03-25
The Lake Ballard sculptures are interesting but Sound II is probably appropriate for a cathedral setting! I love it.
Great shot of you flood
